The significance of May Day focuses on labor rights. In 1886 a labor rally for the eight-hour workday at Haymarket Square in Chicago turned tragic when a stick of dynamite was thrown into the crowd killing police and workers (although not by the anarchist labor organizers of the rally).
Eight anarchist organizers were arrested and most convicted on conspiracy charges. Seven of the eight were sentenced to death with four hanged.
This is the origin of International Labor Day, although this is not when Labor Day is celebrated in the United States because of the association with anarchist, socialist, and communists who were involved in organizing
the Haymarket rally. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_affair
